New Lifter Tip #4: Check Your Ego at the Door
*For New Lifter tips #1, 2 & 3, go here (#1), here (#2) & here (#3).
Avoid the pitfalls of lifting to impress. Unless your currently competing, no other serious lifter really cares how much you’re lifting. What they really care about is their own progress, and that’s how it should be. Learn from the many, many mistakes of all the over-zealous, ego-driven lifters that have come before you - don’t let “numbers” get in your way. Weight on the bar is all relative in the end, anyway.
Instead, as you’re learning each exercise, focus 100% of your efforts on perfecting your technique and control for each lift. Trust the process and that by executing flawless form, you’re strength gains will start coming sooner, and, in time, will begin to surpass those around you who failed to train as intelligently as you anyway. To top it off, you’ll likely avoid many of the pains, strains & injuries those other ego-driven lifters are bound to experience.
